St. Nicholas Festival

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas Festival is an intergenerational event held near or prior to December 6, which is St. Nicholas Day. This is a tradition at Central that celebrates the Dutch story of “Sinter Klaus” (St. Nicholas). The festivities include dinner, decorating wooden shoes, and singing Christmas carols (both English and Dutch!)

The story of St. Nicholas is either read or told to the children. The climax of the evening is the visit of St. Nicholas, who greets each child as he sits in his royal chair, and Zwarte Piet (St. Nicholas’ trusted companion) distributes chocolates to the children. The event concludes with a variety of Christmas crafts the children make and take home, including the wooden shoes they have decorated.
